Elk City, OK to Raton, NM

We were up at 7 a.m. and hit the road by 7:30 a.m. We drove the relatively short stretch though Texas across the panhandle. Looked like a bad night for the armadillos!!! Eeeewww!

Into New Mexico-beautiful.

The first rest stop in New Mexico had this large piece of petrified wood on display.

Below are a couple pictures of the New Mexico desert.

Off of highway 40 and onto highway 84 riding around Taos was awesome. Along the road to Taos we saw quite a few uninhabited buildings. Don't know why they were left standing. Maybe some sort of historical preservation.
The mountains around Taos were beautiful, and the first mountains we rode in so far this trip. Look closely and you can see Joyce being dwarfed by the mountainside in the picture below.
Stopped in Raton, New Mexico. We couldn't believe we rode 585 miles today!! We are over 1,500 miles and its only day three!!! Ate dinner at a nearby restaurant/gift shop. Bought a couple of postcards to send to Tyler, our grandson. One showed a cowboy herding longhorns while riding a Jackalope (more to that story later).
End Point: Raton, NM
Odometer at End of Day: 16284
Miles Traveled: 582
Places we visited:

Philmont Boy Scout Ranch
Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range
Carson National Forest
Santa Fe National Forest
